Reflexology is a gentle art, a fascinating science and an extremely effective form of therapeutic foot or hand massage based on ‘body meridians’ or energy lines. It is considered to be a holistic healing technique, which aims to treat the client as a whole, in order to induce a state of balance in the body, mind and spirit, which in turn restores the body to good health on all levels.
Reflexology (or Zone Therapy) is based on ancient Chinese medicine techniques, which in today’s world, involves the application of pressure by a therapist with his or her thumbs and/or fingers to specific areas and points on the client’s feet or hands, which in turn respond to the client’s vital organs and muscular/skeletal system. The aim is to restore the healthy flow of energy (also known as Ch’i) throughout the entire body. At the Holistic Therapy Centre, the therapy is practiced with the use of oils on the client’s bare feet or hands and is suitable for men and women of all ages. The client remains fully clothed throughout the session (apart from the feet or hands which are being worked on).
The science of Reflexology has been around for thousands of years. It is based on the premise that all life and matter is made up of energy, which is operating at different frequencies – this is Ch’i or our life force. It is believed that this is what keeps us healthy – or not, depending on how free-flowing this life force is.
The Chinese discovered that Ch’i circulates in the body along meridians, similar to the blood, nerve and lymphatic circuits. This vital life force controls the workings of the main organs and systems of the body. It circulates from one organ to another and for each organ to maintain a perfect state of health, the Ch’i must be able to flow freely along our body meridians. If this energy flow is balanced, the ancient Chinese believed that it is impossible to be ill in body, mind or spirit. They believed (as do reflexologists) that illness is a result of an imbalance in the energy flow – or the flow of Ch’i. And the aim of Reflexology is to unblock and restore this energy flow.
Meridians are located throughout the body and directly control our vital organs – they have been measured and mapped by modern technology methods, electronically, thermally and radioactively. They have been described as containing a free-flowing, colourless, non-cellular liquid, which may be partly activated by the heart. By stimulating these meridians, a Reflexologist (or Acupuncturist or Shiatsu practitioner) stimulates and unblocks the Ch’i and nerve function, lymph supply and blood supply are all improved, which can alleviate stress and other health problems in the body.
Reflexology also helps with detoxing the urinary, blood and lymphatic systems, which in turn helps improve circulation. It can also boost the immune system, bring about a general feeling of relaxation and help a client reduce his or her stress levels.
