Reiki (ray-key) is another form of energy healing – but on a lighter level than Energy Healing Therapy.
To quote the Oxford English Dictionary Reiki is “a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being”.
The Japanese word ‘Reiki’ literally translates as ‘universal life force energy’.
Reiki is a system of healing, which was developed by Mikao Usui (a Buddhist monk) in the early 20th century. It is a non-invasive, non-manipulative, holistic therapy involving gentle touch, which works with the body’s electro-magnetic field.
This form of holistic therapy has been taught and used in the UK since the late 1900s. However, Eastern medicine has worked with this life force or energy for thousands of years, recognising how important it is to all living things. All life and matter is made up of energy – it is what connects every atom within our bodies. This energy has been scientifically proven to exist – it is known in the science world as our energy field.
At the Holistic Therapy Centre, Reiki is carried out in a quiet, peaceful environment on the client, who remains fully clothed, lying on a treatment couch face up or face down, depending on which areas are being worked on. The Practitioner places his or her hands gently on or over the body; there is no massage or manipulation. A treatment feels like a warm, radiant glow, which passes through and around the body causing deep relaxation, whilst realigning the body and mind at the same time. It is safe for adults, children, mums-to-be and babies.
Reiki treats the whole person, physically and emotionally and brings about a feeling of peace, relaxation, security and well-being. During the session, the client may experience mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all. Any of these reactions are good.
Reiki supports orthodox medicine or it can be used alone, but it is not a replacement for traditional medication or treatments. It is not based on any belief, faith or suggestion yet scientific research, using quantum physics, is starting to help us understand how Reiki may benefit the individual.
It is important to understand that Reiki practitioners do not diagnose health problems – they simply work on balancing a client’s energy system, which in turn brings about a good state of health.
It is also highly recommended that Reiki practitioners are members of a recognised and professional organisation with strict Codes of Ethics and that they hold Practitioner’s Insurance.
